AI in business: six figures to decide where to act
Adoption, governance, access, compliance, skills and oversight: six studies to help you ask better questions about your AI.
These figures point to questions to ask, not a risk score for your business. They come from six separate studies: the populations, periods and methods matter as much as the percentages.

McKinsey · 2025Each figure describes the population and period of its study. Consult the sources for methodology and context.
Three rules for reading the figures without overstating them.
Read the survey population before the percentage.
A stated intention is different from observed use. A survey of organizations that experienced a data breach does not describe all businesses. The population and period shown with each figure define what can be inferred from it.
Compare the questions without adding up the results.
The six donut segments navigate six situations. Their angles are equal: they represent neither market shares nor components of a total. Adding the percentages or turning them into a single index would create a misleading interpretation.
Connect the signal to a decision in your organization.
These studies help choose an initial question: where is value created, who governs AI use, which access is permitted, which obligations apply, what skills are missing and what oversight exists? Answering it then requires evidence about your own uses, systems and practices.

The primary sources appear with each situation and are collected here. Each figure describes its study population, without measuring the effectiveness of an identifiable service.
